“Slice of Life”

“The first flight lands. I look down at my watch. Roughly 20 minutes remain until boarding begins for our connecting flight. It seemed as if the clock was running faster and faster. One minute, two minutes, three minutes, I arise from my plane seat and reach over to grab my carry on. In one hand, my carry on and in the other, my daughter’s hand. 

Time was scarce. It was as if our surroundings were in slow motion as we rapidly moved through the airport. For a brief moment, I think to myself, “Are we going to miss the flight?” Nevertheless, this thought prompted me to move at an even quicker pace. I felt the cool breeze as I jog to the boarding gate along with my daughter.  

Fortunately, after our tenacious efforts to reach the designated gate, we successfully board the flight.

  The Importance of Being a Good Teacher Slice of Life:         Monday morning arrives. I begin to get ready for my week in the classroom by reviewing my lesson plan to prepare for my students. Suddenly, it is 8 o’clock and one by one my students begin to settle into their seats. The day begins with discussion relating to the text that we read during the previous week. I fill with excitement as my students are eager to participate in conversation. Furthermore, my students proceed with our class discussion by completing a writing practice. I believe that every student needs to establish effective writing skills. Therefore, in the classroom, I thrive to create an engaging learning environment so that my students are passionate about what they write about.

  My Literacy experiences from grades six through twelve (secondary school years).   When looking back on literacy that I have experienced over the years, many books were impactful. The novel,  Hatchet , written by Gary Paulsen, was a story that I will always remember. Not only was the novel very compelling, but it also made me think. The story,  Hatchet , depicts a novel that illustrates a 13 year old boy, Brian, who was very successful at his attempt to survive in the wilderness alone. The way Paulsen portrays strength within the 13 year old teaches readers about independence. Therefore, elements such as Brian surviving the plane crash and adapting by building a shelter, gathering food, and being left with only a hatchet reveals his ability to persevere in times of adversity.
