Teacher Diverse of Notebook Entries AND Intentional Strategies versus Assignments One type of notebook entry Bomer discusses is “ Reaching into Memory.” This type of writing has to do with reaching into our minds and drawing out an experience, no matter the gravity of it, and putting it into words. These memories can be further expanded the longer they are thought about. Bomer suggests that this journal entry gives way to quick writing, as the first memory that comes to mind should be the one that gets the writer writing. In many ways, this type of notebook entry is a gateway to other types, as beginning with one small memory can lead to many different stories, points of views, and descriptions. Another notebook entry explained in chapter 11 is “Writing toward what is Significant.” This type of writing is all about explaining the importance of a small idea. When first writing, we jot things down and proceed to toss it because at first sight, it seems to have no signif...

The Importance of Being a Good Teacher Slice of Life: Monday morning arrives. I begin to get ready for my week in the classroom by reviewing my lesson plan to prepare for my students. Suddenly, it is 8 o’clock and one by one my students begin to settle into their seats. The day begins with discussion relating to the text that we read during the previous week. I fill with excitement as my students are eager to participate in conversation. Furthermore, my students proceed with our class discussion by completing a writing practice. I believe that every student needs to establish effective writing skills. Therefore, in the classroom, I thrive to create an engaging learning environment so that my students are passionate about what they write about.

Book, Head, and Heart strategy The novel, New Kid , by Jerry Craft tells the story of a student who has just entered an entire new world. The story is a graphic novel, from the perspective of all the characters but centered on the protagonist, Jordan Banks. The main character, Jordan, is artistically blessed, but his parent’s expectations and control lead him to a school that does not cater to his needs. He faces the wrath of a bully, his mother’s judgement, and a shady teacher all while trying to find his place at a new school. Meeting friends along the way, Jordan learns to bring together his support system, and even support seemingly undeserving characters. Craft, in this novel, is helping the readers understand this uncommon, yet common, issue, of being the only new kid at a school. Jerry Craft adds in the element of skin color and subtle, yet clear racism to realistically illustrate the hardships of being a new middle school...

READING AS THINKING As I read, I usually create images of characters and visualize the setting and the plot. Therefore, I also envision sounds and sometimes recall similar events that relate to my own life experiences and relate. Personally, things that are easier to see are descriptive images of elements within a story. If the setting is a time period I am familiar with and the author illustrates the characters with great detail, I am able to make richer pictures in mind like a movie. Furthermore, I am able to hear what I am reading through visualizing sounds and creating voices associated with characters based on how they are described. I picture characters as people and sometimes associate them with people I possibly know or have seen on TV. Therefore, the thoughts that I develop about a character are established by the qualities the author gives them in a story and the way they are perceived by other characters. There are a variety of ways ...

EXPLORE READING LIVES! 1. How does your current book travel around with you? What exact part of your backpack, pocket, purse, or whatever is involved? a. My current book travels around with me in various ways. Sometimes, my current read may be located on my phone or it may travel with me in my purse on the way to work or in my backpack on a flight. Right now, my current book lives in my car, in the passenger’s seat if nothing else needs to be there. When I leave the car, the book hops into my bag, by my most used items so every time I take a glance, I’m reminded that I still need to read my book. It’s by my phone and my planner, next to my everyday things so it won’t be forgotten, as it so easily can be. 2. ...

Blog post – Airport Marathon “Slice of Life” “The first flight lands. I look down at my watch. Roughly 20 minutes remain until boarding begins for our connecting flight. It seemed as if the clock was running faster and faster. One minute, two minutes, three minutes, I arise from my plane seat and reach over to grab my carry on. In one hand, my carry on and in the other, my daughter’s hand. Time was scarce. It was as if our surroundings were in slow motion as we rapidly moved through the airport. For a brief moment, I think to myself, “Are we going to miss the flight?” Nevertheless, this thought prompted me to move at an even quicker pace. I felt the cool breeze as I jog to the boarding gate along with my daughter. Fortunately, after our tenacious efforts to reach the designated gate, we successfully board the flight.

My Literacy experiences from grades six through twelve (secondary school years). When looking back on literacy that I have experienced over the years, many books were impactful. The novel, Hatchet , written by Gary Paulsen, was a story that I will always remember. Not only was the novel very compelling, but it also made me think. The story, Hatchet , depicts a novel that illustrates a 13 year old boy, Brian, who was very successful at his attempt to survive in the wilderness alone. The way Paulsen portrays strength within the 13 year old teaches readers about independence. Therefore, elements such as Brian surviving the plane crash and adapting by building a shelter, gathering food, and being left with only a hatchet reveals his ability to persevere in times of adversity. Furthermore, these elements support Paulsen’s message about self-reliance and independence. Regarding teachers that significantly impacted me, I would say my English and...
